Phenakistoscope was an early animation device that was created by Joseph Plateau. “It consists of a disk with a series of slightly similar images, drawn on spaces evenly spread out around the centre of the disk. Slits are cut out of the disk on the same radii as the pictures but at a different distance from the centre. The device would be used in front of a mirror and spun. As the phenakistoscope rotates, a viewer looks through the slots at the reflection of the drawings, are momentarily visible when a slot passes by the viewer’s eye. This created the illusion of animation.”
