You have had the opportunity to participate in service-learning activities on a regular basis in the SEL (Social and Emotional Learning) module this semester. We believe that engagement in such activities in a real world setting not only provides you with an authentic learning experience that meets community needs, it also provides you with a platform for self-discovery and self-development.

The purpose of the individual assignments serves to extend this learning. The objectives are two-fold. We aim to
1) Develop your writing skills – in areas of idea generation, selection, development, organization – through the analysis and reflection of your selected topic,
2) Hone your language skills – with the use of appropriate grammar and register – as you apply strategies to represent information and ideas to address a variety of purposes, audience, contexts and cultures.

Select ONE of the topics below. You will be required to examine a social issue in Singapore over a span of 1.5 months (i.e. from Weeks 4 to 10). You may use the guiding questions found below the suggested topics to guide you through your study.
Suggested Topics (you may choose your own topic after having discussed with your lecturer):
Restoring public confidence in the MRT system
Rising cost of living
Social responsibility and bike sharing
The power of social media in bringing about a positive change in societySocial media and its impact on personal data security
Guiding Questions
You may use the guiding questions below to guide you through your study:
Define your topic. How is the topic you have chosen a social issue?
How do the actions of individuals contribute to the social issue?
What is the role of the society-at-large?
What is the extent/severity of the social issue in Singapore?(You may use research statistics / infographics to illustrate your findings).
How has the Singapore society tackled the issue? Was the attempt successful? Why / why not?
Propose solutions to solve / mitigate the social problem.

The report comprises of a total of 40 MARKS, and accounts for 40% of your grade in Semester 1.
You are required to meet the following deliverables:
Submit a hardcopy printed format of your Individual Assignment to your Lecturer on Week 11 Day 2 (Tuesday, 17 July 2018) before 5pm.
Late submissions will be penalized, refer to table below.

The Individual Assignment must be original (in your own words), well organized (introduction, body and conclusion), and be free from grammatical and spelling errors.
The length of your project report should be a minimum of 800 words to a maximum of 1,000 words (not inclusive of cover page, abstract, references and appendices, 1.5 line-spaced and arial font size 12). Make sure you cite your references and ensure they are from reliable sources.

According to Dictionary.com, the definition of social media is online portals and applications that gives users the ability to create and share content or to participate in social networking. The ability to be able to create your own original content to spread knowledge about yourself or the things around you makes social media a dangerous place for both youths and adults alike. However, there are huge communities attempting and doing their utmost best daily to bring about a positive change in the current society. Therefore, it is a social issue as it is a problem that influences a considerable number of individuals within a society.
A whopping number of 2.46 billion people use social media platforms such as blogs, forums, business networks, photo-sharing platforms, social gaming, microblogs, chat apps, and finally social networks. This shows that social media is indeed powerful, and anything posted into it, can never be deleted as there are many, who are constantly waiting for the next big thing to share.

Figure 1 shows that Singaporeans spend slightly over 2 hours on social media every day.
Positive change
What does change mean? Change means to move from one state to another. Change is the connecting action that allows or causes one thing to replace another, be it positively or negatively. A change could also mean the transformation, the thing that happens when we move from one state of being to another. Change is what we end up with when the connecting action is over.

What does positive mean? In the form of an adjective, it means constructive, optimistic, or confident. However, in the form of a noun, it means a desirable or constructive quality or attribute.
Therefore, a positive change means is a want or a desire to move from one state to another state. Its results should be optimistic and constructive, a feeling of a lighter heart after one’s breakdown for an example.
Positive effects of social media
The positive effects of social media in Singapore include easy access to expert health information, emotional support, community building, self-expression and building relationships.
Negative effects of social media
While there are positive effects, there are negative ones too. The negative effects of social media in Singapore include anxiety, depression, lack of sleep, increased awareness of body image and cyberbullying.
The definition of society is the aggregate of people living together in a more or less ordered community. In this case, the society is referring to people living in Singapore.
Examples and Explanations
Individuals who are constant users of social media often post content onto their social media accounts. This allows others, who view their accounts to follow, like and comment on their content. For example, if someone were to post a picture on Instagram, they would receive likes, comments and views and they would be able to see these likers.

Figure 2 shows an Instagram post made by me, from here you can see the likes and comments I have gotten.

An example of a positive change on society made by social media is if someone with a large following on Instagram, were to post a picture of herself donning a pair of gloves and thongs, cleaning up a beach, followers would almost immediately begin to follow suit. Those who are environmental activists would also begin following this person as her content interacts directly with them and their purpose. This encourages people to be more aware of the environment and the cleanliness of it. This is an example of a community building positive change in the society.
An example of a negative change on society made by social media is someone were to use their Instagram account to hate on other people. Dissing them or in other words, cyber bullying them would be a major negative change in the society as some might follow suit. This is an example of a cyber-bullying negative change.
A solution to cyber-bullying is to highlight certain ‘bullying’ phrases such as ‘you should go and die” or “what a loser” which then should be brought to the attention of that particular websites’ manager. The manager should then vet through to check if it’s a comment that could possibly harm someone. This should be done within a few hours to prevent much damage. Schools could also implement stricter rules on cyber-bullying to prevent such a negative change.
