GREED: An excessive desire to acquire or possess more than what one needs or deserves, especially withrespect to material wealth (Definition of greed by THE FREE DICTIONARY)Gordon Gekko says – “Greed is good, Greed is right, Greed works, Greed clarifies, cuts-through and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit.”
a)RULES IS RULES – DEONTOLOGY Rules are rules not matter who you are, where you are from and no matter what you do in life. Rules must be respected all the time. . Greed is not good at all. As the definition above states that it is the excessive desire to acquire more than what one needs or deserves. Greedy people will never be satisfied with what they have, they will continue to want more and more even if they do not deserve it. Many a times greedy people do not like to share whatever they will be having.
When it comes to my opinion of greed, I believe that greed can be a good or bad thing. In his speech, Gordon Gekko says, “Greed Is Good”. But I think that there is a difference when it comes to greed and being better than others. Greed can be good because it gives people a goal, something for people to strive towards. I do not think that Kant would agree with Gekko because can’t believes you should do what is good for everyone, whereas greed only benefits yourself. Kant also wants all people to be even and fair, whereas greed makes some people better than others. When it comes to Bentham, he would definitely side more towards what Gekko is saying. Bentham says that you should do what you must as long as you are maximizing yourself, and that is what greed is, you are only benefiting yourself. In the end I believe that greed can be positive and negative, it all depends on how you apply it to your own lifestyle.
