Excessive, unnecessary stress for learning youth is the first reason why homework should be banned.Do you know why every student dreads the last five minutes of class more than the other seventy? No? Well, it’s quite obvious really; this is the time when homework is assigned. So why does this simple 8-letter word fill us with dread? The reason is that homework has become more stressful than ever. This is extremely overwhelming because the kids have spent the day solving difficult math problems, reading several chapters, and memorizing long lines of poetry and what not in school. Furthermore, do we want growing children spending their nights trying to complete each vast assignment for every class, too stressed and overwhelmed to even sleep,and having anxiety about it class after class, day after day, year after year? So pressuring them with homework will make them feel burnt out. Students struggle to complete the nightly homework given. Not only is unfair to judge a child off of a grade, because each child learns differently, according to Couturier, Catherine’s article “Should Homework Be Abolished.” it is stated that homework does not directly affect test scores. If bombarded with endless lessons at school and at home, students may feel stress and anxiety should they fail to complete the assignment on time. Obviously, it is unhealthy for children to feel a burden of homework, especially when school should be an enjoyable time for learning.
The second obvious reason homework should be outlawed is because it is problematic to parents (family life) and teachers. It is unreasonable for a child to apply their skills from school if they do not have a stable household as a learning environment, especially if both parents have a limited education or are not present. The student with the high-speed internet connection and a bookshelf of encyclopedias has an unfair advantage over the other students. Furthermore, students might develop questions about the assignment and teachers will be unable to deal with student problems. Resulting in sloppy homework which neither benefits the student nor the teacher. In relation to the lack of resources in some homes, there is also a lack of support from parents. For example, in elementary schools alone, there are a number of student’s parents that do speak English fluently. Also, schools have to take measures such as publishing the newsletter in different languages. If such a high number of non-English speaking parents exist, then why do schools give massive amounts of homework, while knowing full-well that there may be no one in the home to help if a question arises? As for English speaking parents, one cannot expect every parent to be familiar with curriculums of grade 12 math, or grade 11 chemistry. Thus, one can see why the limited guidance available to students at home would create a negative effect on a student’s homework. While it is true that homework helps scholars learn to work individually with time management skills, this doesn’t necessarily mean that it is not helpful to have somebody there to give personal attention and guide a child in order to comprehend the lesson. Yes, some may say it is a teachers job and they signed up for it. However, wouldn’t it be much more beneficial to everyone, especially teachers, if instead of grading papers 24/7, they could be spending time preparing for valuable future lessons? In addition, teachers should assign homework regarding ethical morals, virtues, and real-life problems and solutions rather than giving multiple repetitive worksheets and problems. Also, homework is not a good indicator for the parent or teacher to show where a child stands with a particular lesson, because each child learns differently, therefore, giving a child a certain score may not reflect on their knowledge. One can easily see why the limited guidance available to students at home would create a negative effect on a student’s homework.
The third and final reason homework should be eradicated is that it disrupts extra-curricular life. It is healthy for a growing child (up to a certain age) to have the experience of imagination and creativity of self-guided fun. On top of that, 7 hours of school and then measureless hours of assignments, and going to school exhausted and in fear of how much homework that is going to be received that day, there is no time for any other extracurricular activities.Students are bombarded with hours of homework every night and it interferes with their lives/growth. They are tired of staying up late at night to finish their homework or a paper that is due the next day. Students should not have this workload that they have every night at a young age, as well as experiencing their childhood. Life is too short to be staying up until 11:00 because of schoolwork. We all know the downfall of homework: the frustration and exhaustion, family conflict, time loss, and decreasing interest in learning. Hours on end of essays, worksheets, problems, and reading, cuts away time that should be spent with family and loved ones. It is true that children should do academic work outside of a classroom, but this work should consist of real-life social situations and solutions that cannot be found inside of a textbook. Additionally, it is healthy for young kids to play instruments, play sports, and participate in other mind challenging quests, compared to stressing about turning in a paper the next day, or whether you have passed or failed, but being a kid is limited due to homework. Nowadays, it is not as simple as just sliding a book or two in your belt, instead, kids have to lug an entire suitcase practically to the bus stop. Teachers should be sending students home with something to think of, besides packets and worksheets. Without a doubt, the time spent doing homework could be spent doing many other valuable things that are necessary for a kid to be a kid.
Obviously, homework should be abolished because it is too stressful to students, problematic to teachers and parents, and disruptive to extracurricular life.
