Aim
Aim: To find out what happens when magnesium is heated in the presence of oxygen.
Background Information: Magnesium is an Alkaline Earth metal that has 12 protons, 12 neutrons and 12 electrons. Oxygen is a Non-metal that has 8 protons, 8 neutrons and 8 electrons.
Equipment:
Tripod
Heatproof mat
Clay pipe triangle
Crucible and lid
Bunsen burner
Tongs
Safety Goggles
Method:
Weigh the crucible and lid then add Magnesium and weigh again.
Heat the crucible with the magnesium in it and place the lid on top.
Continue to heat at medium heat for five minutes whilst lifting the lid occasionally.
Record what happens then weigh the final product.
Discussion:
The
The magnesium strip got heavier when it was heated up this is because of the oxygen combining with the magnesium to create magnesium oxide.
What happened and how do you know something happened?
Explain the chemistry that’s happening
Link the results back to the hypothesis- especially any surprises
How did you/could you make it accurate, safe and fair
