Addiction of Heroin Drug
Heroin is most dangerous and addictive drug which people use. Heroin is known as an opioid drug. Heroin is also one of the illegal drugs to use. Heroin look like as a powder that has colors of white or brown. There are presenting problems that shows why people should not use the heroin? And also shows the treatment of the heroin drug. Heroin can affect the person in many ways. Heroin can harm the person’s brain and body. Heroin is one of those drugs which will affect the brain so quickly. And it is also easy to becoming addicted to heroin once people start using it. After using one or two time it is so hard to stop using the heroin drug. There are few ways people use the heroin drugs. There some people smoke and snort it or most people inject them self. That’s the dangerous way to use it and get overdose from drug.
According to the Key Substance Use and Mental Health Indicators in the United States: Results from the 2016 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2016), shows several different drugs which people are addicted to. And heroin is one of those drugs. According to the research it shows that due to heroin, you feel so happy for few hours but after that time period, people will start feeling like everything is going in slow motion around them. Those people who are addicted to heroin also start having health and physical problems, people start staying away from their work, school, and their responsibility, etc. They start meeting their failure by overdosing heroin. People are start losing their mind control. “In 2016, approximately 473,000 adults aged 26 or older had a heroin use disorder in the past year, which represents how many people using the drugs in this age group” (National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 2016).
Moreover, according to the book Heroin at issue drug by Stuart A. Kallen (2006) shows that heroin is made from the seedpod of the Asian poppy plant. And it’s also processed from morphine. Heroin is an opioid which enters the brain quickly. Once the drug affects the people’s brain it will slow down the brain and the way people think and it also affects their memory. It also has control over people’s decision and people also cannot express their thoughts over any discuss. Heroin does not only affect the brain but it also affects the body as it has been mentioned before in the discussion. Heroin slows down user’s heartbeat and breathing, and it’s also take people closer to their death. “Heroin abuse is associated with serious health conditions, including fatal overdose, spontaneous abortion, collapsed veins, and particularly in users who injected the drug, infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS and hepatitis” (Heroin at issue drug in section 3 NIDA, Kallen 2006). People also get other diseases from sharing needles of drug.
There are some symptoms and sign for heroin when people use it and when people get overdose due to the drug. When people try to use heroin for the first time, they feel happiness after using the drug. Also they feel sleepy and drowsy all the time and people cannot concentrate in their work, school and because of that, they experience failure in their life. They also start having breathing problem and people start using needles resulting in having needle marks. There were also few signs for overdoses of heroin. The first sign is when people take more breaths per minutes (Shane Darke and Wayne Hall 2003). After people use the injection of heroin users feels happiness but together they also feel a warm flushing of the skin, and a dry mouth (Heroin at issue drug in section 3 NIDA, Kallen 2006). After people get overdose their eyes pupil get smaller so, those who see them will think they are really sleepy. They also get sweaty skin. Sometime they also get violent. And due to overdoses people can go into coma too (Shane Darke and Wayne Hall 2003).
There are also people who get overdoses of heroin which leads them to death. According to research, it shows that in Europe, Australia, and United states have many people dying due to heroin overdoses. “Opioid overdoes causing death scenarios increased from 1.3 per million in 1964 to 71.5 in 1997” (Shane Darke and Wayne Hall 2003). Adults are not the only ones dying from overdoses of heroin but younger people are also dying due to overdoses. And some younger people are using the drugs because of peer pressure. They think that they can do it if others can do it.
The research shows that there are not many people who go to treatment for drugs overdoses (Shane Darke and Wayne Hall 2003). “Nonfatal overdose does not typically occur among new heroin users. Overdoses commence characteristically only after several years of heroin use. Similarly, non-fatal overdoses overwhelmingly occur when the person is not enrolled in drug treatment” (Shane Darke and Wayne Hall 2003). The heroin purity is where people can measure the drugs in quantities to test it. According to the article, “Heroin overdose research and evidence based intervention (2003)”, it states that heroin purity is a major cause of death for people who use heroin. But, research and evidence has failed to support this statement.
Approximately 152,000 young adults aged between 18 to 25 in 2016 had a heroin use disorder in the past year, which represents 0.4 percent of young adults, the percentage of young adults with a heroin use disorder in 2016 was greater than the percentages in 2002 to 2007, but it was similar to the percentages in 2008 to 2015 (National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 2016). According to research, higher risk of getting overdose is when people smoked the drug rather than injecting it themselves. According to research it shows that, “In Australia, despite increased heroin smoking, 99% of overdose deaths result from the injection of heroin” (Shane Darke and Wayne Hall 2003).
Moreover, there are so many people who get drugs from the streets. The reason people are dying because they use heroin with other mixed fentanyl and other contaminants (Elinore F. McCance-Katz, M.D 2014). “Street Heroin may have additives that do not readily dissolve and results in clogging the blood vessels that lead to the lugs, livers, kidneys and brain” (Heroin at issue drug in section 3 NIDA, Kallen 2006). But there is also some treatment and medication which people can use on time, they can get recover from heroin. According to the Elinore F, McCance-Katz, MD (2014) shows that the drug the naloxone can be used as an antidote on people who are overdosed to save their lives. To come over death, people can use the naloxone drug in syringe form so that it can be injected into the person. It is not only responsibility of the person who is using the drug but also their family who needs to be aware of the overdoses of the drugs so that they can give them naloxone on time in any situation.
“SAMHSA has an Opioid Overdose Toolkit that provides important information on opioid overdose and how to use naloxone to save lives. Doctors can prescribe naloxone for anyone using opioids and who may be at risk for overdose” (Elinore F. McCance-Katz, M.D 2014). There were also few therapies based on heroin because each person is different and they will have different therapy depend on the person. According to heroin effects on the body and brain, people need to go to individual counseling and group counseling.
They need behavioral and supportive therapies where people can get motivation on what they are supposed to do and what they do not need to do. The different therapies can help built their self-esteem. The research also shows that there’s contingency management therapy where people can get gift and earn points based on negative drug test, which they can exchange for items that encourage healthful living (Heroin at issue drug in section 3 NIDA, Kallen 2006). There’s also methadone, a synthetic opiate medication that blocks the effects of heroin for about 24 hours. There’s also Buprenorphine is also a medication available for treating addiction to heroin (Heroin at issue drug in section 3 NIDA, Kallen 2006).
In conclusion, there are many evidences that show that usage of heroin is dangerous to anyone’s health, if addicted to it. There are so many people who use drugs due to different reasons, such as peer pressure, and depression. Any kind of addiction is not worth it because you are killing yourself by using drugs, as well as those around you who care for your well-being.
