It is just another way of saying how I want to modify  the existing system at Higher levels of Education. A rough reading of  my previous blog on corruption would enlighten you on what everyone thinks of Education. Quite astonishingly, education  seems to have  very low esteem in the eyes of the general public.

There was  a time long back in the hoary past when Avvaiyar  said-Ennum ezhthum kannena thagum(Numbers and alphabets are like the two eyes);a  time when people in the west believed that  one educated man in every home is enough to bring prosperity to society; a time when Gandhiji said ,educate a woman and you educate a whole family. There are countless couplets written by Thiruvalluvar on the value and importance of education and a million in sanskrit on how ethics in adminsitration is a serious study on its own. What is panchtantra and who wrote it and for whose sake?Panchatantra is the five secrets of administration taught to the dull princes  who wouldn’t study.

So through stories, the teacher,Vishnu Sharma in 2nd century BC, instills the value of good governance and the principles behind adminisration- So, the five principles or practices illustrated by Panchatantra are – ‘Mitra Bhedha’ ‘Mitra Laabha’ ‘Suhrudbheda’ ‘Vigraha’ ‘Sandhi’ These were generally taught as prose papers but in this case, the teacher has used the popular story mode to keep the attention of  his audience; the wayward princes.Now, after having come a long way from a past that boasts of excellence in teaching ‘how to rule” from  Chanakya’s needhi (India)and  techniques of administration from Machiavilli’s strictures(west); all which impress upon the fact that “Ruling is an Art that has to be studied like any other subject… ” , What do we have today? I write a blog on the importance of Education for able understanding of good administration and I get nearly half a  dozen comments saying  it is not important.

Now like Avinashjee, I feel like uprooting my hair. LOLZ.Well, I take it that our people are not responding to the concept of Education as what I have it mind. They probably think of it as Medical science paper,Engineering papers,   BSc Computer Sc, BSc Mathematics and BBM, where teachers teach only that subject.

So the students  have a  head full of assimilated informaton on how to do this and that. Yet they do not have in their texts,any thing even remotely related to adminstration. So when they enter the polical arena as “educated” people, they are as uneducated  green horns to administrative ethics as an “uneducated” person.Therefore, they are as prone to misrule(or in this case- corruption) as any other. Those days only Kings got to rule the country and so only they studied it. Today, anyone can become a prime minister or chief minister, given appropriate circumstances,so every one should study it.

If all  citizens  of India  can exercise their   franchise  freely, i. e,vote; then by the same logic it also  ensues that all citizens have the inherent right to rule,if they so  desire. Forming the Government is not the prerogative of the congress alone, or is it?Assuming that the common man, if he so desires can reach there,it becomes incumbent on the part of the Universtiy to equip him with the right kind of Nidhi shastras that would help him  later in life(just in case). So  I envisage the Undergraduate courses, of being more expansive.

Instead of superfluous subjects in their  first  year like Hindi  and English,(or in addition to them) they should have a paper titled INDIA- It should not contain any sentimental stuff. It should contain our National Income and the way taxes are collected and public money redsitributed.It should contain our  foreign policiies – Our  troubles  with pakistan and china too. It should contain some news titbit on NPT and what we are doing about it.

It should contain the water disputes and the boundary disputes betwen states. The terrorist problem , Naxal problems  should find a place there along with a  cartload of trouble that  awaits a future PM(in case you become one). It should contain a bird’s eye view of the  laws of good governance, that is  accepted world wide. When  all  this comes about, people who use divertive tactics  will not be given a hearing when they  preach linguistic fervour, or religious ones.It  will  be summarily rejected outright  as deviation from  good governance. When I say education, I mean all this that I have mentioned.

Every indivdual ought to possess  the self awareness of where we live, and an ability for responsible  discussion on what we should do to extract the maximum joy of living there. Above all the individual’s natural curiosity ought to be so ripe that it helps him collect information about the world from the radio. tv and newspapers and develop a clear sense of what is expected from a ‘Leader’ and from a common ‘Citizen’.That should comprise part of good education. What we have today, is a bunch of looney crowd clamouring to earn lots of money, have fun  at discotheques, talk of films and cricket and waste a good part of their money and energy on self-induldgence. The thinking of the modern generation is clearly disoriented because nobody seems to take responsibility to shape their minds.

The habit of teachers to linger on topics unrelated to the subject at hand,a chat on culture or ethics, on men and matters,  during the last few minutes before the bell has gone. It is a mad rush and we cannot blame them entirely.Therefore I consider this “INDIA” paper  something that should be made mandatory; a MUST inclusion in the syllabi of  every  Indian  undergraduate. It  would make  Education, a body  that promotes  general awareness and an ability to reign if we could(what in common parlance is “Leadership qualities”). After having come out of his course of study, one ought to come all shaped and shining , not only as a  scientist or a teacher  but someone with a strong social responsibility. It is only in the hands of our educationists that the future of the indian mind can be shaped and it should be done with care.The main idea is trying ways and means to cultivate a sense of unity towards a common past that we have shared during these sixty years of post Independent Era; to cultivate  feelings of  One India -one people  consciousness by transforming our weaknesses into strength.

For example, if we consider diverse languages and diverse religions as a block that holds us from being one, we are weak. Whereas, if we get people to learn each other’s language and write poems praising each other’s  regional distinctness, we endear ourselves to each  other and this helps glue the two together.If we consider every religion as reverent and work within that framework, without showing  any favour or mercy to wrongdoers anywhere, we really earn the confidence of every community. Today everyone feels endangered , including those of  the majority religion(ie Hindus); again it is a   result of bad governance and nothing else. A proper exercise of wisdom alone can  turn the tables to our favour.

If the education system is streamlined so that  it openly attempts to give the  students “real” education and not  a mere collection  of assorted  FACTS…

. , we are into the activity of  building the nation.
