Premarital Sex is defined as the sexual activity practiced by two people who have not yet received the sacrament of Matrimony. It is referred to as fornication in the Holy Scriptures. According to the bible, there are specific boundaries around sexual acts. Acts committed outside these boundaries are called porneia, a Greek term that refers to sexual immorality. In our world today, the youth has become more tolerant of premarital sex than earlier generations. While traditional values, religious instructions, and the laws of some countries continue to prescribe abstinence until marriage, the rapid societal changes that have occurred resulted to the growing acceptability of premarital sex. Due to this, the prevalence of sex before marriage in our country is increasing continuously thus addressing this issue is very important for it has a huge impact on the quality of life. In general, the sexual experience among unmarried youth is of several distinct types reflecting a combination of long-standing marriage institutions and relatively new forms of relationship among the single. A typology of premarital sex is committed sexual experience, casual sexual experience and commercial sexual experience.
Committed sexual experience is sexual intercourse between two people who are in a committed relationship with each other. According to research, this experience makes you feel safe and secure. Being committed to your partner can give you a sense of security that you will not be able to get from casual sex because trust is present. You have the potential to be open and direct to your partner and expect the same in return. For many couples, the act of sex itself is a powerful way to transform subjective feelings of love into tangible acts of loving and appreciation.
However, having sex with someone does not necessarily mean that you love them. This is proven in the casual sexual experience. It is the sexual activity that takes place outside a romantic relationship. There are three different kinds of casual sex- “no strings attached”, another is “friends with benefits”, and the third is sex with an ex. No strings attached is two people carry on a purely physical connection with one another, yet there is no emotional connection between them. It often involves sexual intercourse with a total stranger or someone whom you just met. There is a physical sexual relationship but there is no sense of obligation or commitment. An example of this type of relationship is a “one-night stand”. It is a sexual encounter lasting only one night without the expectation of seeing the person ever again. Friends with benefits on the other hand is, a sexual relationship with someone you are acquainted with or someone whom you’ve known for a long time yet you are not committed to each other in any way. The bond and the commitment in friendship with benefits are less deep than in romantic love. These relationships offer an easy-going friendship as well as sexual activity without the emotional turmoil associated with committed couples. As for sex with an ex, it is when you engage in sexual acts with someone you’ve had a romantic relationship with in the past. The main reason why many do it is because they desire for sexual contact with someone. For some, having sex after they have broken up brings a sense of closure. This happens for a lot of partners who ended their complicated relationship with a storm of confusion.
There are some other instances when the body is used in exchange for money or other economic benefits. This is what we call commercial sex. It is any sexual act on account of which anything of value is given to or received by any person. Any payment is traded for some kind of sexual objectification of another person. This includes all forms of sexual exploitation for profit including prostitution. In the Philippines, prostitution is widely practiced despite it being illegal. There are three kinds of prostitutes in our country: those who are employed by pimps or brothel owners and work out of “casas” or brothels, entertainment girls and streetwalkers or freelancers who work on the streets. Sex workers who are employed by pimps are in premises explicitly dedicated to providing sex. Majority of the prostitutes fall under the category of entertainment girls. Girls who usually work in bars, clubs, restaurants and spas who give “extra service” are part of this classification. They are business employees who cannot refuse clients produced by their managers. Their safety is secured because they work inside an establishment. Freelance prostitutes on the other hand are self-employed. Their clients are solicited on the streets. These sex workers have more mobility and have some freedom in choosing their clients. They all advertise their service through taxi drivers, bar bouncers, club managers, word of mouth and online. These agents receive part of the price in exchange for referring clients.

Although sexual behaviours in teenagers and the youth is mostly due to the effect of their sexual hormones, the role of psychosocial factors such as media, friends and peers, family and the use of drugs and alcohol cannot be denied. Teenagers in today’s generation are very curious about trying out new things. This motivates the youth to engage premarital sex.
