Immunogenic cell death
Immunogenic cell death (ICD) recruits the immune system to destroy diseased cells and can induce an “anti-cancer vaccine” effect.
It is becoming evident that certain conventional chemotherapeutics may exhibit a synergistic immunomodulatory effect that contributes to clinical effects. Traditionally conventional chemotherapeutics achieve malignant cell death via apoptosis, which is considered to be immunologically silent, however, several lines of evidence have suggested that certain conventional chemotherapeutics such as oxaliplatin and anthracyclines may induce synergistic immunomodulatory effects.
