There are many semantic tools for knowledge management that make use of ontologies

There are many semantic tools for knowledge management that make use of
ontologies, ranging from Protégé suite (that requires good technical skills in
ontology engineering) to easy-to-use online groupware platforms.
Sousa et al (2016) studied development and usage of lightweight ontologies from
theoretical viewpoint to comprehend collaboration and conceptualization
procedures and ontology modification and alteration. The study focused on the
importance of the early phases of the ontology development with the involvement
of users and supported by appropriate tools to guide the ontology development
processes. The study provides a theoretical outline of ontology development
including procedures of knowledge development for ontology creation, and
validation.
Stracke (2010) studied how related metadata could allow the seeker to find
resources or information needed. This research indicated that the semantic web
applications and ontologies can improve related metadata by assigning significant
links to terms, for instance that rabbits are related to bunnies, hares, leverets, Bugs
Bunny, Roger Rabbit and the Desert Cottontail. These links can form semantic
contexts that in turn link to other contexts needed to assemble learning in the
correct semantic sequence to make it meaningful to the learner.
The research carried out by Soares and Sousa (2008) demonstrated that the
conceptual maps can be considered as an important collaborative knowledge
acquisition tool for designing ontologies. They used unique scenarios of
competency assessment with the help of Concept Maps and tried to come up with a
new approach to collaborative ontology development in two different domains:
nutria-genomics and plant genealogy management.
