The Roman Republic developed an entirely national education scheme which was practically unaffected by external influences. This happened gradually over several centuries. Contemporary written accounts of Roman education during the early years of the Republic does not exist and one has to depend upon statements made by later writers. The Roman Republic was generally an agricultural society and just like many other agricultural societies life in early Rome was structured and supported by religious, social, economic and political rituals which stressed a traditional belief and value systems.
The system of education existed in order to transmit the Roman traditions to the young, just as was the case with many other societies e.g. Hebrews.
