The rate at which the bladder fills with urine is approximately 0.5ml/kg/hr (Stegall 2007). For adults, when the bladder reaches a capacity of 200 to 400ml then its wall stretches triggering a nerve impulse to the brain which unchained several mechanisms in which sphincters that control continence relax therefore it is possible to empty the bladder. Urinary retention may develop if there is an obstruction to outflow or damages to the nerve impulses that control bladder’s mechanism. Urinary retention is defined as the inability to pass urine (Stegall 2007), and the incidence is larger in men than in women (REFERENCE), due to the anatomical differences between both sexes.
