The movie Matrix was a very popular movie in the late 90’s early 2000’s starring Keanu Reeves as Neo, Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus, Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity and Agent Smith played by Hugo Weaving. This movie had many similarities in the readings of Plato and Descartes, they all talked about what was real and what wasn’t. Skepticism and the knowledge that we have of reality came with some flaws but in the matrix it was a computer game that put reality and false reality against each other. This could have been a page out of the very own Descartes and Plato manuscript but the Matrix wasn’t a concern during their days. If we look at all three we can see similarities of control one by a computer, by mankind and perception and all three are talking about controlling the people by delusions. Morpheus planted the seed in Neo; Neo planted it in Trinity, to know the true even if it meant dying even Morpheus wanted to know. Their push for truth was on the front of their mind even in Plato allegory of the cave the people have been chained as prisoners since childhood and once again the prisoners would have seen that they were not real if they were able to turned around and looked at the fire and may have realize they were shadows if they were free from the chains. Descartes perception could either be true or false depending on the person mind state. In not knowing the truth we could very easily be misled in our thinking in what’s real and not real.
The Matrix, Plato and Descartes all three were talking about mind control in knowing what was real and fake. We look for the answers to different problem that may come our way and to solve them as quickly as possible. You should want to know what you need to know in order to know the difference. The brain is the most advance computer in the world it contains and sends billions of pieces of information throughout your body. The mind can be fooled in delusion, illusion but will work to seek the truth in knowing what’s real and not real. When you look at all three you can see the younger generation with their heads down in their phones playing games, Plato people afraid to come out of their comfort zone stagnate in life feel as though nothing is left and Descartes believes there is a much higher power in control of our thinking but being like doubting Thomas we cannot be misled by evil demons. For all three some people would rather for you to keep your mind locked up in other words if it’s not broken don’t fix it. Some just cannot think for themselves or outside the box.
Putnam wants you to look at life and live the best you could.
Can we prove that the world we are experiencing is real? How do we know we are not dreaming, living in a Platonic cave, or trapped in some sort of matrix?
Good question but “In order to prove anything, we need to have premises which we already know to be true” Hasker. So I believe what the bible says in Genesis 1:1NIV “In the beginning God created the havens and the earth.” At this moment in time we cannot prove or disapprove that everything isn’t real. We have to stand on the promises of God’s words that what is written in the bible is as real as it gets. Num 23:19 “God is not a human, that he should lie”. God said it and that settles it, end of discussion. It’s all I have to show the world is real is the word of God
