The Kauri Dieback
The Kauri Dieback is a disease in the kauri trees which caused by the fungus pathogen called as Phytophthora agathidicida. which spreads through the soil movement, including
on footwear and other clothing and gear
on vehicles driven in affected areas
Animals – including wild pigs, stock and pets.

Many observations based on soil samples suggests that kauri dieback is a soil-borne disease with long-lived bacteria spread by soil movement, and short-lived bacteria moved in water flow in soil, and some bacteria are spread through the roots to root system.

The ideal soil temperature of kauri dieback is 20 to 25°C. which is higher than average soil temperatures in New Zealand. This suggests clearly that the disease is come from the overseas.

lefttop
Symptoms of Kauri Dieback Disease
Leaves of the tree start becoming Yellowish
Branches starts dying
The canopy becomes thinner
Starts bleeding of the gum at the bottom of tree trunk
Government agencies and Research institute used different methods for prevention of the disease such as
Use of phosphite
Biological control,
Using alternative organic products
Traditional M?ori medicines and
Genetic resistance.

The best way to stop the spreading of the disease is to prevent the soil movement. This means:
By staying on the marked tracks in the forest.

Keep distance from the tree to avoid the spreading of the disease. clean up the shoes, gear and other equipment or machinery.

Constructing the fence at the boundary of bush, which protects the biodiversity as well as protect the kauri tree from the dieback.
Keep the animal on the track while walking in the forest and wash properly before leaving the forest.

Many new scientific research has been done for controlling the disease. Currently the most effective method which already implemented in the forest for curing the disease by vaccinating the kauri seedling with the Phosphorous acid (phosphonic acid or phosphite), which is used successfully to manage Phytophthora diseases in avocado, citrus and other crop trees. As a result, phosphite provided good control when applied to kauri seedlings
This year government had invested $4.7 million to save kauri trees from the dieback disease. This almost the doubled funding for fighting this enormous threat to the most iconic tree of the New Zealand. Government also introduced a programme which is known as Kauri Dieback Management Strategy programme which was released in 2014, which provides a vision and overall goal for kauri dieback management over the next 10 years.
The Main purpose of the programme is:
To identify the key challenges for the programme and implementing new strategies to solve the problems.

To mainly focus on the efforts to the areas that will bring more advantages.

To serve the collective work with programme partners and with the community support for protecting kauri.

Protecting the kauri trees for the future generation by introducing various programme like:
Controlled Area Notice
Accelerating Protection for Kauri project
Development of a National Kauri Dieback Management Plan (NKDMP)
Controlled Area Notice
In this programme people who visit in the forest cannot take their footwear, equipment or other items with any visible soil into the Controlled Area. People using the forest must also use all cleaning stations which had been encounter to clean shoes, gears and bicycles by scrubbing with the brush provided and using the sanitizer provided.
Accelerating Protection for Kauri project
The Accelerating Protection for Kauri project is a part of joint efforts to protect kauri for future generations.
Development of a National Kauri Dieback Management Plan (NKDMP)
This is one of the strongest plan for protecting kauri in Biosecurity Act 1993. This Plan is a long-term approach to the management of dieback disease. It will be a legal document that sets out rules for controlling the disease for spreading across the country.

In Maori culture Kauri is the natural resource which is highly prized and have significant value for them because it provides special benefits to them such as.

ecosystem
historic heritage
cultural values
tourism industry
national identity.

In the recent period Department of Conservation initiated a plan to protect and save the tree from kauri dieback.
