ABSTRACT
We all need languages to express what we think in different ways. In our daily conversations, expressing refusal is unavoidable. Sometimes, refusal may threat the relationship between speakers and be considered a face threatening act if interlocutors are not careful to use it. Hence, the purpose of this research is to show how to use politeness stategies in giving refusal in English and Vietnamese language. In this research, some politeness formulations and speech acts of native speakers are mentioned in order to contrast the similarities and differences in giving polite refusal between the two target languages. Some pedagogical implications including considerations and suggestions for appropriate use of refusal are also provided for learners who may have problems with English and Vietnamese cultures in communication.
