Steinbeck uses setting to encourage the reader to feel sympathetic for Crook. This is evident in the quotation ‘his bunk in teh harness room’ and ‘a long box filled with straw.’ This suggests that Crook’s is treated like an animal, he seems to have the same rights as an animal and not as a human. He isn’t treated equally to the other workers, he can’t even step foot in the bunkhouse whiel Candy’s dog can. This shows the status of black people in America. People wouldn’t see black people by the person they are but by the colour of their skin.This also connotes the racism, inequalities and seperation Crooks and other black peopel had to deal with on a day to day basis.We can see that he has grown careless and doesn’t have the same necessities as everyone else.
