Learning how to learn allows us to be better equipped to deal with life and our experiences. Thesis Statement: Learning how to learn is an essential life skill that allows a person to grow cognitively as well as psychically and allows them to handle the trial and tribulations of life.Question / Topic: ‘Learning how to learn is integral to the development of a person’. Discuss. 1. Topic sentence # 1 learning the right method of learning increases the rate of a childs development. * Cole and Scribner (1974) test on the difference in memorization between Liberian children who were schooled and non-schooled showed that the school going children were much better at memorizing lists than their peers, as a result of learning different methods of encoding in school.

* Learning to learn allows the child to be able to better grasp and understand new ideas, thus allowing the child to progress faster than usual.Children also learn to critically evaluate ideas and thus develop their own. Using different techniques like equating learning to fun, especially among younger children will help them to learn better and enjoy learning, according to Dr Sharon A.

D Lee The Junior Academy’s American curriculum consultant. Concluding Sentence: Teaching children how to properly absorb and understand information, with aids such as school, or equating with fun will help them to develop quicker and also to learn how to think abstractly. 2.Topic sentence # 2: A person is able to modify/develop his personality and behaviour. * As children, most of what we learn is through observation, by observing models and people around us, we learn behavior.

As children we do not yet have the ability to differentiate what is right and wrong and so we sometimes learn the wrong thing. Therefore, by learning the difference only can they choose a model for behavior and develop a healthy personality. Nevertheless, despite being taught the difference there are many people who look up to unhealthy models. Teenagers and adults sometimes look to change their personality and behavior, to fit in to a certain group or perhaps in society, therefore, they too identify a model that they can observe and imitate. This is very common is high schools when teenagers just to fit in with a particular crowd, alter their personality to become someone they are not, which does not always mean for the better.

Concluding Sentence: Development can be twofold, positive and negative and it has all to do with the individual and what they perceive as right and wrong and what path they choose to follow. . Topic sentence # 3: Understanding experiences and moving past and avoiding mistakes. Our lives are full of mistakes and regrets, but how we emerge from them defines who we are. It is impossible not to make mistakes. Nevertheless there are always some behaviours that we know to be wrong, and although never having experienced it, we know them to be wrong such as addiction to drugs. This could be due to observing someone with the problem, such as a relative or friend, or even through teachings.

Furthermore, the individual learns through these two methods, never to do or to repeat a certain action, thus allowing for growth and development both mentally and emotionally. Certain experiences in life leave the individual stumped and confused, they have never encountered something like that before and don’t know what to do. Although there is no subsititute for experience, learning about a particular thing will equip the person to deal with the situation better than they would have without the knowledge. Thus allowing the person to identify, who they really are what the truly believe in.Concluding Sentence: We may have the knowledge but the reality is very different, nevertheless, the knowledge undoubtly helps. Conclusion Learning how to learn is a complicated processs that is nevertheless essential for the holistic development of an individual.

This includes studies as well as dealing with emotions and in finding out who we truly are what our beliefs are. Development is not only positive but also negative. Nevertheless, without having the added advantage we would struggle and make countless mistakes, therefore, as the old adage goes, it is always better to be safe than sorry. Conclusion Learning how to learn is a complicated processs that is nevertheless essential for the holistic development of an individual.
