Give examples where titration methods are used in practical applications
Titration is the analytical process of determining the concentration of a dissolved substance or mixture in terms of the smallest amount of a substance used in chemical analysis or any other reaction of a known concentration. Titration has many uses for example it is used in medicine when scientists determine the unknown concentrations of chemicals in a person’s blood or urine. Also Pharmacists use titration in the development of new medicine. Titration may also be used to determine the amount of a certain chemicals in food so nutritionists can find out what is good and bad for you.
What is a standard solution and what is it used for?
A standard solution is a solution containing a known concentration of an element or a substance and the standard solution. A standard solution can easily be made by dissolving any mass of a certain reactant into a volume of water that you know the measurement of. Standard solution is important because they are used to determine the concentrations of other substances or elements, through experiments and processes like titration where it will be used in.
How the preparation of a standard solution in the industry differs from a college lab and how it is similar
There are many differences when preparing the standard solution for example the equipment they use in an industrial lab is more accurate. For example the pipettes they use extract the solutions more effectively by making sure it is the right amount to make the standard solution, whereas the pipettes in a college lab cause more errors as sometimes they don’t exactly stop extracting at a certain point. Another difference is that the equipment they use when making the standard solution is a lot more expensive than the ones in a college lab. For example they use a different type of weighing scale which takes samples of the material being used to measure the mass of and carries out a precise measurement telling you much more you need to add or how much to take away so you get that exact amount. Another difference is that when they are making the standard solution the ones made in college aren’t very concentrated whereas in an industrial they would make higher concentrated standard solutions. However there are also some similarities between the two. For example they would both use the substances to make the standard solution. Another factor would be that they would both have a very similar method when making the standard solution as you are just dissolving a substance into a certain amount of water.
How the procedure and equipment of titration in the industry differs from a college lab and how it is similar
There are many differences when doing titration for example the way they collect the readings in an industrial lab is more accurate. For example in an industrial lab they would use an automatic titrator, which is a machine that takes the weight of the substance from the weighing scale and does the titration process however it automatically records the information. However in a college lab it isn’t as accurate as it is all manual, we are recording the information with our eyes and our hand to eye coordination isn’t perfect and most likely would be a human error so when releasing the solution from the burette to the flask and you want it to stop at a certain point it won’t be exactly where it should stop. In an industrial lab you are able to conduct the titration without any assistance, but in a college lab you need to be supervised by a teacher just in case you need help or an error occurs. However there are some similarities between the two when doing titration. For example they still have to use the same type of equipment so an industrial lab and an college lab would both use pipettes volumetric flasks etc. another similarity is that they both trying to find out the concentration of a dissolved substance, and to figure that out they both have to do the same calculation.
