On September 11th

On September 11th, 2001, a horrific and devastating attack was made on The United States of America. The result of this terrifying tragedy was caused by nineteen Middle Eastern terrorists, known as “Al Qaeda”, that got on board and hijacked four airlines. Two of the planes were used as threatful weapons against two skyscrapers in New York. The third was used to destroy the Pentagon in Washington D.C., and the fourth plane was brought down in Shanksville Pennsylvania. Based on an overview of these events, officials believe that terrorists’ motives were to take down either the U.S. Capitol or the White House. Lives lost, totaled to over 3,000 from these attacks, and many more were ruined due to the loss of family, friends, and coworkers. In order to impede a recurrence of the events of 9/11, a change in security policies have been established, new qualifying actions have been taken, and national awareness reinforced. However, the problematic concern with new security procedures, is that they often have the ability to take away some of our civil liberties as citizens of a democracy. Not only did this tragedy cause a devastating break in humane relationships but also brought about a new controversial debate within our nation. The main topic argued in regards to homeland security and national defense, is that individual freedoms can be sacrificed for the sake of safety. The opposing argument claims that is a dishonor to our constitution, history and country to take such authoritative actions. I agree with those who support regulative security, regardless of some of the certain liberties and freedoms that have to be given up.
