What impact did they have on the overall development of computer systems?
Ava-Gay Simpson, while I partly agree with your answer I would also like to add to it that the Vacuum Tubes had a positive impact on the development of the computer systems in the early days where it was used as a switch, amplifier or display screen (CRT) it allowed the first computers to perform digital computations, they were also used to amplify signals for radio and other audio devices. Much of the progress in the past 60 years has been because of the success of the transistor. Invented in the 1940s, it replaced vacuum tubes in televisions, radios and other electronic equipment. Its ruggedness, small size and low power consumption produced a wave of miniaturization resulting in home computers, digital cameras, cell phones and other devices. They can turn currents on and off billions of times per second way more superior to the Vacuum Tube. Digital computers use transistors as a basic mechanism for storing and moving data (Papiewski, 2017). Integrated Circuit can contain hundreds of thousands of individual transistors on a single piece of material the size of a pea. Working with that many vacuum tubes would have been unrealistically awkward and expensive. The invention of the integrated circuit made technologies of the Information Age feasible. ICs are now used extensively in all walks of life, from cars to toasters to amusement park rides (Saint, 2018). A microprocessor is normally capable of many functions, such as word processing, calculation, and communication via Internet or telephone. A microprocessor would act as device’s “brain” in that it transmits, receives and interprets the data needed to operate a device (Sandoval). The impacting development of the four computer components on computer systems has come a long way from being enormous filling an entire room to now being able to fit in the palm of your hand, they had clock speed of several hundred KHz to few MHz compare to today’s Intel core i7 clock speed of 1.6-4.4 GHz, first-generation computers had very little internal read-write memory, Punched cards and paper tape were used for input and output initially, computers of today’s generation can hold up to 1Terabyte for internal read-write memory, now you can use just the swipe of your finger to operate most of your electric devices. Growth is tremendous and is increasing day by day impact our lives in an extremely positive way and am looking forward for much more in the upcoming years.
