Censorship tell the general population what should

Censorship tell the general population what should

Censorship within the United States is not only an immoral and “big-brotherly” practice, but also an insult to each and every one of those who call themselves US citizens. Every day, censors attempt to sanitize TV, radio, music, print, and even the Internet.

In their infinite wisdom, they deem what should and should not be viewed by John Q. Public. Censors succeed in suppressing our free spirits and restraining our thoughts in virtually every medium.

We have all been given the ability to rationally think for ourselves and make our own intelligent, moral decisions. We all understand the differences between right and wrong and are freethinking, liberated people. The founders of this great, blessed, and splendid country guaranteed its citizens many rights, which are documented in the US Constitution, our formal laws of existence. The United States is the only country in the world where all men are created equal, endowed with certain unalienable rights, among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Most importantly, freedom of speech, press, and religion are our constitutional right.Somewhere along the line, someone had the notion that Americans are not smart enough to view questionable and objectionable material. Censors were instituted to tell the general population what should and should not be viewed and thus began this travesty. Government organizations, such as the FCC, routinely and systematically subjugate and suppress the freedoms that we have to express ourselves as guaranteed by the Bill of Rights. Censors edit radio broadcasts, discriminately place black-bars over televised images, and even try to refine works of literature and art so that they meet “acceptable standards. As US citizens, we should be appalled that such practices are allowed. Not only are we deprived of rights, but we are subjected to the control of others.

If I choose to go home and turn on my TV to see a half-clad woman and hear frequent vulgarities, then by all means, I, as a citizen of this free country, should be allowed to do so. Who is to determine what is degenerate or depraved? What should qualify a person to become a censor? A FOX-TV broadcast of car crashes and animal attacks attracted the network its highest viewer ratings. “Shock-jock,” Howard Stern has taken his Saturday night television show on CBS and in most markets quadrupled the ratings in that time slot for the 18-34 year old male demographic. It should not be the responsibility or even the job of the FCC or any other wacky Right Wing philanthropist group to tell John Q.

Public what he can see, hear, and read; that is John Q. Public’s job. Censors are only performing a great disservice to the humble people of this country.Personally, I find it obscene and insulting the way the government tries to control our lives. To discover that someone has decided that I am not capable of making intelligent choices leaves me speechless.

It is my choice, and mine alone to do as I please, with certain limitations. If something is offensive to others, there is always a choice that can be made to view or hear, or simply to turn it off and/or tune it out.Surely the millions of dollars pumped into censorship each year could be better spent on feeding starving families or building a shelter for homeless people. How ironic is it that government officials spend our tax dollars to block us from what we want to see and hear? Morally, censorship is wrong and a violation of our free will.

I certainly do not feel that this country should develop any loose ethics or shoddy morals, but give the people what they want! As Americans we need to stand in unison for our rights. Although it is close to impossible, we must demand the cessation of the methodical, precise, and exact censoring of our TV shows, radio shows, literature, arts, and web pages at once! The longer we remain controlled, the more we will continue to be controlled. We must exercise our constitutionally given rights, and relentlessly pursue that which entertains us.Bibliography:
