Being responsible for one’s mistakes Jeff Bezos Amazon CEO When Amazon deleted copies of unauthorized versions of Animal Farm, there was a lot of backlash from the customers of their products. The CEO publicly apologized on the mistake and accepted that the company’s way of addressing the issue was not right. Owning up to one’s mistakes is an act of responsibility and leaders should not pass blame to other innocent individuals. The role of power and influence is important in leadership. The leadership role is a function, which should be used to nurture and inspire other members of the team and not a position to show and declare power for the negative reasons (Northouse, 2018). Leaders have a lot of influence on their followers and the performance of an organization is based on the leadership traits of the managers and other individuals in authority. A good leader will strengthen the organization through empowering the followers, which is important for teamwork (Northouse, 2018). Different interactions between leaders and their subordinates will influence the performance and perceptions of leadership in the organization. Leaders can use their power to influence other individuals’ behaviors through the utilization and control of organizational resources (Northouse, 2018). Leaders should also aim to influence the thoughts and attitudes of their followers in an organization. This can be achieved through their actions and words, which can be used to drive the team toward the same vision. This will lead to commitment, which is necessary for continuous success for the organization (Northouse, 2018).
Some of the leadership traits which will inspire others include being positive. This involves looking at the bright side of any situation (Linzey & Pierce, 2015). A leader will always face challenges and issues in the organization which if the leader focuses on the negative will achieve no results. Being positive will encourage and motivate their followers in times of troubles, which are bound to happen in an organizational setting (Linzey & Pierce, 2015). Another important leadership trait is being grateful and recognizing positive results. Members of a team feel motivated when their efforts are recognized. Team members who are not appreciated by their leader will be always be discouraged to achieve the same performance again (Linzey & Pierce, 2015). A leader who shows gratitude to his/her followers will definitely realize continuous success from the inspired team. Leaders should as well have a vision for the future. A leader without a vision for his team will definitely head in the wrong direction. An effective leader will have a clear vision for the future, which the leader can use to inspire his/her team members. A vision contains the road map and goals expected to be achieved by the team (Linzey & Pierce, 2015).
Qualities that will foster effective leadership include good listening skills. Without good listening skills, a leader is unable to solve some of the issues affecting the team. Listening also determines how a leader reacts to certain issues (Paul, 2016). This also inspires members to contribute their opinions towards the organizational goals and vision which is important for the success of the team. A team is meant for all involved to participate in the vision of the organization, which can be achieved by effective listening, as this will also enhance trust between the members and the leader (Paul, 2016). Good communication will also foster effective leadership. Without communication, an organization’s vision cannot be understood by the members and can lead to misunderstanding between the team members (Paul, 2016). Effective leaders will integrate effective communication channels to ensure that everyone is on board and knows exactly what his/her responsibilities are which is necessary in ensuring that all team members perform their duties effectively (Paul, 2016).
