It may be necessary to adapt the way you communicate when the person you are communicating with is deaf or has a hearing impairment use sign language. Using sign languages is a great way for teachers and children to connect with each other. Facial expressions, gestures and eye contact will help teachers communicate with pupils, even if they don’t understand what you are saying they would get some sort of idea. Also, you should speak clearly and slowly as children may be able to lip read what you are sayingAt my setting Belmore Primary Academy, there is a child who has a hearing impairment; she has difficulty in hearing and understanding things quickly. Teachers make sure that the child is sat on the carpet in front of the class. It is ensured that her face is clearly visible and background noises are kept down to a minimum. Children are provided with picture images and flash cards.
The SEN Teacher always tries to find a quite area for the child, it is ensured that visual aids are provided for the child. Children in the class are always encouraged to support and repeat any instructions if the child does not understand. Belmore primary academy school is awesome, it uses a ‘buddy’ system, and this is where they get to choose someone to play with for lunch time.
If children have any of these difficulties they provide picture images and flashcards.
