It is an exciting moment for me to sit down and reflect on how wonderful it has been for me to learn Society and Medicine in the space of 1 year plus at the Copperbelt University (C.B.U). Society and Medicine has been one of the interesting and lovely course since the first day I started learning it at the Copperbelt University. I have acquired some knowledge through the learning of this course at C.B.U which has really being of help to me through my stay in the university and the community at large. I look forward to learn more about it (Society and Medicine) and as such it is one of the courses I consider to major in. However, let me take this opportunity to explore on what this course has taught me and how it has been of help to me.
It was in October of 2016, when we had a lecture with Ms P. Mwila on learning and memory and it was so interesting and exciting to have learned about it. We discussed what learning is, the theories of learning, we also discussed what memory is, the stages of memory, types of memory and how memory can be enhanced. It was of great excitement to me because I love to learn more about the brain and how it works. In that lecture I realized that memory is a mentor thing and therefore connected to the study of the brain hence I was just so joyous. I think it is of paramount importance to study more about memory and how it can be improved in that it is what we know that determines how we live and it has a great impact on our lives. Memory is so important in our lives cause without it we cannot operate both in the present and the future. Memory enables us to remember what we did yesterday, what to do in the present and what we have planned to do in the future. Hence without it we can do what we planned to do for now and in the future. Am being taught medicine here because am expected to go and use the same information in the hospital which is all dependant on my memory. My learning is dependant on my memory. This is the reason I choose to reflect and write on memory even when we have covered a number of subjects in Society and Medicine. Memory is the ability to retain information over time through three processes: encoding (forming), storing, and retrieving (Plotnik and Kouyoumdjlan, 2008).
Our minds are a very important asset to live successful life and therefore need to be improvised on a daily base. In this course I learnt that our memory maybe improve and it really caught my attention in that I also wanted to see mine improved. We were taught that long term memory can be improved in the following ways: rehearsal, overlearning, distributed learning, minimizing interference, deep processing (attention), organizing material, mnemonics, acronyms, acrostics, rhymes, method of loci, clarity of stimuli, forming list and dramatization/role playing.
