Introduction: Barack Obama delivered the keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. At the time of his address he was a first time candidate for the U.S. Senate. His selection as the keynote speaker came as a surprise to many as he was not widely known outside of political circles. This speech has great relevance due to the great reception it received and the effect it had on his national exposure.
The American Dream: Barack Obama and his family rose up from the poverty they were once in to allow Barack to obtain a higher education and enough support to allow him to follow his dreams. Although he is an American, he is proud of his African heritage on his father’s side. He shows humility in himself by crediting those who have also accomplished the American Dream: “I owe a debt to all of those who came before me, and that, in no other country on earth, is my story even possible” Later in his speech, Obama addresses the achievements of Senator John Kerry. He states that Kerry understands community, faith, and service through his credentials. From his service in Vietnam, to his years as a prosecutor and lieutenant governor, through two decades in the United States Senate, Kerry had the credentials to be a leader. Obama also points out that because Kerry has invested so much time in public positions, he understands what it means to be an American citizen. This concept can also be tied to Obama’s understanding since he is the epitome of the American Dream
