In the Southern United States in the late twenties, Celie, the protaganist and other black women faced great difficulties for being both black and for being women in society. But while being discriminated for their skin tone by the whites they also had to deal with mistreatment and domestic violence from almost every man in their lives. Throughout the story Celie gets to know a few black women, who help her deal with her difficulties and her lonely circumstances. The three most important women in Celie’s life who help her become stronger and grow are Nettie, Sophie and Shug. They truly show that females are stronger together.
