I believe that Dr.Christine Margaret Blasey Ford is telling the truth about Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulting her. From my perspective, I don’t see why anyone would go through everything she has gone through, just to tell a lie. I also believe that a liar,in this case, would eventually slip up and say the wrong thing that would expose them as being a liar, but I don’t believe this to be the case with Dr.Ford.
She struck me as a credible sexual assault survivor. When she was asked about the impact that the sexual assault has had on her life she said, “Brett’s assault on me drastically altered my life. For a very long time, I was too afraid and ashamed to tell anyone these details. I did not want to tell my parents that I, at age 15, was in a house without any parents present, drinking beer with boys. I convinced myself that because Brett did not rape me, I should just move on and just pretend that it didn’t happen.” This quote shows that she’s credible because she tells us exactly why she never told anyone about the assault. She knew that she would only be humiliated and that she would get in trouble for coming out and talking about what happened to her.
Dr.Ford was then asked about why she wasn’t so detailed in her recounting of what happened to her. She responded by saying, “I truly wish I could be more helpful with more detailed answers to all of the questions that have and will be asked about how I got to the party and where it took place and so forth. I don’t have all the answers, and I don’t remember as much as I would like to. But the details that — about that night that bring me here today are the ones I will never forget. They have been seared into my memory, and have haunted me episodically as an adult.” This quote also proves that Dr.Ford is credible because, I believe that a real sexual assault victim won’t remember every single detail about what happened to them, especially if the assault took place decades ago. They will do their best to forget about everything and try to just move on with their life. They wouldn’t try to think of what they had to go through because it would just terrify/haunt them for the rest of their life. I believe this to be the case with Dr.Ford.
The counterargument that Dr.Ford and the Democrats waited to talk about what happened to her so they could stall the process of Kavanaugh’s nomination is false because Dr.Ford herself said that she couldn’t decide about whether or not she should talk about what happened to her. She eventually decided that she should because she felt even more obligated to speak out when she realized that Kavanaugh’s nomination was unquestionable. She said, “I was panicking because I knew the timeline was short about the decision.”
The counterargument that Dr.Ford was politically driven is false because when Dr.Ford first started talking, she said, “I am an independent person, and I am no one’s pawn.” This implies that she did this on her own and that she didn’t do it on the Democrats behalf like a lot of people believe. This quote also backs up my claim that she had nothing to gain by coming out and requesting a hearing to talk about the assault.
The counterargument that Dr.Ford is lying because she can’t remember all the details about what happened at the party is false because she said she was one hundred percent sure that Kavanaugh was the one who sexually assaulted her. She also said that the brain tends to only remember the major details and that the small details are forgotten over time. This would explain the reason as to why she can’t remember every single detail and more importantly validate her claims.
All in all, I truly believe that Dr.Ford was telling us the truth about what happened to her. It’s a shame that Kavanaugh was sworn in and that the FBI investigation lasted only a couple of days. It proved to be a joke and It showed that our system is just terrible. This case is basically allowing things like sexual assault to continue to happen because the people that commit these crimes have no consequences to fear. I hope that a case like this in the future doesn’t turn out the way this one did. Hopefully, we will have a better system in the future for cases like this and for any case in general.
