Human right is defined by the United Nations Human Rights Office of High Commissioner as “rights inherent to all human beings, whatever our nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, color, religion, language, or any other status.”. I consider accurate to say that the human rights are not respected completely anywhere on our planet. “To violate the most basic human rights is to deny individuals their fundamental moral entitlements.” states an article that was written by Michelle Maiese. This means that you treat people as if they are less than human and undeserving of respect and dignity. Examples include genocide, torture, slavery, rape, medical experimentation, and deliberate starvation.

In order to make sure that these rights were respected, laws were created. The purpose of laws is to preserve freedom and moral agency. Laws exist to protect the rights of the members of a society. But in the corrupt world we live in, the bad are not always punished and the good not always find justice. Therefore, people have to make an extra effort to make the world a better place for everyone.

People tend to help the protection of human rights of all by participating in local human rights activism. Not all people are able to advocate for human rights on an international or national scale. Nevertheless, there is plenty of work that individuals can do locally to promote and support human rights. By participating in a local event against a human rights violation, such as protesting in favor of the legalization of abortion, your actions become part of a larger collective action against injustice.

There are various organizations that host diverse events that promote human rights like marches and the signing of petitions. These events are to show an aversion or a support toward a topic and to spread knowledge about an injustice or about something that needs to be done. Also, there are other events that focus more on the collection of money for a cause, like to help poor families, give a roof to the homeless, provide clean water to those who do not have it etc. In this case, other activities are provided, like marathons, the promotion of donating and multiple sales.

The thing previously stated are not the only things you can do to defend the human rights of all people. In Nicaragua, there is this organization called TECHO that organize donations and the building of houses for homeless families. You can help gather money to build the houses and you can help build the houses too. There are many more organizations like TECHO all over the world, like ones where you teach kids from a low social class to write and read. The first thing to do is get informed on activities in which you can participate. Whatever you do, you can never do too much to defend the human rights of everyone.
