have just finished a book called “Counseling Those with Eating Disorders” By Raymond E. VATH M.D. I think this book would be perfect for anyone struggling with eating disorders. Raymond talks about the nature, causes ad consequences of anorexia nervosa and bulimia. He begins by telling us what eating disorders do to the body. Raymond tells us that eating disorders can affect the body in many different ways. Eating disorders can mess with your brain activity and your brain cannot function well, when people have delusional ideas saying that they are fat when they are not this is a process of a starving brain. Studies have shown that the longer you have this disorder the less grey matter you have. Raymond also tells us that both anorexia and bulimia patients show a higher incidence of seizures disorders than the general population. Without eating your heart can shrink and you can become very weak this will make your blood pressure very low and you will have poor organ perfusion which can than lead to impairment metabolic process. In chapter six Raymond talks about the effects of starvation and weight loss, starvation can lead to changes physiologically and psychologically. There may also be emotional symptoms that you have with eating disorders you may be depressed, socially isolated and withdrawn from coming in contact with others around you. I truly enjoyed reading this book he gave me more information about eating disorders that I myself never knew until I read more about it. In this book the author gives you stories of people with eating disorders and how they

overcame this disorder he begins by saying that you should seek for help or maybe try eating breakfast daily and change the negative thoughts that you have about yourself and body. You should always look for clues on how you started having an eating problem, always think about how the problem came about Raymond tells us that knowing how the problem occurred will help the doctors diagnose your depression. Personally I struggled with depression there would be times when I didn’t eat or times when I just wanted to be alone and just eat a few. Sometimes with all the stress with school or work I would just lose my appetite and come home to lie down. I was very embarrassed with my problem that I didn’t tell anyone what was going on I didn’t have a eating problem I was very stressed with life and family issues going on along with school and not eating or just wanting to be left alone was a coping mechanism I used when stress and anxiety overwhelming for me. The hardest part about this was when none knew what was going on with my depression. Depression for me made me feel unlovable or unworthy but I knew that going to the bible and reading Psalm 34:17-18 “When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” Matthew 11:28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Reading these verses made me feel better knowing that God is always there and I’m not alone and there are people who love me deeply. I would recommend this book to anyone who struggles with depression or eating disorders some of this book is sad but it is important for those
