These are the words of A.E.H. Coo, President of Canadian Amateur Lacrosse Association.

Lacrosse Warriors Club is recently open in our University (University of Fraser Valley) this year’s winter session. In UFV there are many clubs like Salsa Club, Bhangra Club, Badminton Club and many more. These clubs give opportunity to many scholars to give wings to their dreams. But in lacrosse club, there is little bit new thing. Lacrosse club not only gives an opportunity to the physically well students but also gives an opportunity to the students who are not physically well. Many of the tournaments are organized by many organisations to give rise these students’ dreams.

History of Lacrosse: –

In the tribal games, Lacrosse has its origin. This game was mainly played by Woodlands Native Americans and by some Plains Indians tribes in what is now the United States of America and Canada.

Earlier hundreds of thousands of nearby tribal or villages grouped together in an open plain ground which is nearby to both the groups to play this game. The game starts at sun rise and ends at sun set. Due to hundreds of players, the ball and players movement is very slow. The rules of the game are set before the day of the match in a meeting. On the day of match, players gave himself scary looks with the help of charcoal. Moreover, their sticks were also decorated. After completion all the rituals, they make a loud random sound while the move towards the ground. They made loud sounds to scare other team members

Earlier the match of Lacrosse wasn’t friendly they were having some means behind their game. Some tribal mess up in Lacrosse match to show their dominancy. On the other hand, some of the issues were also solved by Lacrosse match. For instance, if one village has the land issue or water issue with another village they set a match of Lacrosse to solve an issue.

Equipment’s required for playing Lacrosse: –

A. Equipment’s for Men’s and Boy’s Lacrosse: –

• The Crosse: – It is the main equipment for playing this game. It is made up of wood, laminated wood and synthetic material. For attackman and midfielder its whole measurement is about 40-42inches whereas for defenceman 52-72 inches Crosse stick is used. The top bowl structure net of the Crosse of goalie be 10 – 12 inches wide and other players have 6.5 – 10 inches widespread.

• The Ball: – The color of ball is yellow or orange and white made up of solid rubber. Moreover, it is 7.75 – 8 inches in perimeter and 5 – 5.25 ounces.

• The Helmet: – To cover head and having chin guard.

• The Mouthpiece: – The mouthpiece must be an easily noticeable color is required.

• The Gloves: – The gloves protect the players from hand injuries and also the Crosse is not slipped off from the hands of players during the match.

• Other protective Gears: – Shoulder pads are compulsory for all the players except the Goal Keeper. Both arm pads and rib pads are highly suggested. In count to a mouthpiece, helmet, gloves and a shielding cup, goal keeper should have to wear throat and chin protector.

B. Equipment for Girls’ and Women’s Lacrosse: –

All the equipments are same as that of men’s Lacrosse but changes are only in proportions. A girl’s Crosse total length is 35.5 – 43.25 inches. The head of the Crosse have to be seven to nine inches wide. The goalkeeper’s Crosse may be 35.5- 48 inches long. The head of the Crosse may be mesh and up to 12 inches wide.

Note: – NOSAE is the organisation which releases the standards of the protective gears. All the equipments should meet their standards which they are set.

The figure of players in a team: –

In men’s Lacrosse, 20 players are on the field means 10 players from each team. The distribution of 10 players are 3 Midfielders, 3 Attackers, 3 Defenders and a Goalie.

Moreover, Women’s Lacrosse team is slightly different there are 24 players on the field means 12 players from each team. Two more players are 1 more Attacker and Defender as that of men’ team players distribution.

Rules of Modern Lacrosse: –

Earlier the Lacrosse match was having the risk of life but European immigrants to North America extensively modify the game for making it safe for collegiate and professional form.

Some of the rules of Lacrosse are following: –

• Presently, the one match of Lacrosse is typically divided into two halves and 4 quarters with each quarter being 12 minutes long. Kids Lacrosse match are shorter whereas college students Lacrosse match are longer.

• The players of both the teams face each other. The ball is in between both the teams and when the referee whistles the match starts now both the team members show their efforts to get the ball.

• None of other team mates can touch the ball the only goalie can. All the other team mates use Crosse stick to touch the ball while passing and attacking.

• When the player is within 5 yards of ball or the opponent player has the ball only then a player can body check them.

• An area around the goal called a crease where the opponent is not allowed to enter. They can only reach with their stick to pick the ball.

• When the ball or player with the ball goes out of the field, the opponent team get the ball.

• In the two feet fields it is the fastest game played by the players in the world.

• In 1794, the rules were set the first time when Mohawks and Seneca played against one another.

• This game is national sports in summer whereas, in winter, Canada’s national sports is Ice Hockey.

• The United States experiencing its fastest growth of the sports as it observes a significant increase in the number of people interested in this sport.

• The Natives and most interestingly the French are credited with setting the foundations on which the game continues to stand.

Fastest Growing Sports: –

“A record total of 746,859 players competed on organized lacrosse teams in 2013. The growth rate from last year (722,205) was 3.4 percent and youth participation topped 400,000 for the first time ever.” said by US Lacrosse in his annual report.

“Between the 2008-09 and 2012-13 school years, participation in high-school lacrosse grew 19 percent among girls (to more than 77,000 players) and 15 percent among boys (to nearly 102,000 players)” National Federation of State High School Associations analyzed by BuzzFeed.

“There are two main reasons for the trend,” said Rick Burton, the Falk Professor of Sport Management at Syracuse University, about the rise in popularity of lacrosse. “One is that lacrosse is being developed as a gender-neutral sport. It’s a virtually identical game between men and women. Two, it’s an active, contemporary game. Types of Lacrosse: –

Lacrosse is basically divided into two main categories one is Men Lacrosse and another one is Women Lacrosse. Lacrosse is also divided furtherly based on levels which is high school, collegiate, major league lacrosse and international lacrosse. Both girls’ and boys’ teams are present in High School and Collegiate. The difference is that High School Lacrosse is played state wide whereas Collegiate championships for each conference and championships for each division, for example, division, 1, 2, and 3.

NLL full form is National League Lacrosse and MLL stands for Major League Lacrosse. Both NIL and MLL are incorporate with each other. At the close of the seasons there are having championships in both the leagues. Competition between two international teams is taking place in International Lacrosse.

Next one is World Indoor Lacrosse Championship (inside form of lacrosse played mostly in North America). This league is sponsored by Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) that is held every four years. Since in 2003, Canada has won all four gold medals and is undefeated in all games of First Tournament. First two tournaments were hosted by Canada, Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) that is held every four years. Since the first tournament in 2003, Canada has won all four gold medals and is undefeated in all games. Moreover, in 2019 next tournament of WILC will be held in Langley, British Columbia, Canada.
