Freneau makes a point of comparing religion to nature and basically says how you do not need a priest, a church, or a revelation to see God’s way. He explains how proof of God is all around us in nature. It is also arguable that the author of this piece is saying that Mother Nature is God. This piece can be viewed differently by different people but I believe that he is saying to those non-believers that there is a God, otherwise there would not be so much natural beauty around us. At one point Freneau writes, “It damns them not for unbelief” after writing about doom and joy which I found very interesting. This line stuck out to me because I believe it can be analyzed as either if you do not believe in God you will be damned because you will go to hell, or it means if you do not believe you will make yourself damned because at this time religion gave structure to most people. Religion explains the unexplainable and in a time where scientific understanding of the world was minimal this was very important because the thought of knowing there is a God allows people to live life with joy rather than fear. Those who do not believe in God damn themselves because they worry about the potential doom around them rather than enjoying the life they were given. The last stanza is also important because it describes how hopefully one day all will agree on a religion and life will be better. This makes sense because during the years this piece was out there were religious disputes around the world and it was an active topic for people to input on during these decades. However Freneau did not get what he wanted because today there are still different religions and problems created among them.
