Consequently, sustainability must be the foundation of all development and conservation planning in the future because not approaching development sustainably will be/ is detrimental to the health of our planet as a whole, saving it is dependent on adopting sustainable practices as our negative impacts are serious and cumulative. Sustainability is extremely essential to the built environment and preservation of it, for the reason that it helps redirect manifold principles and considerations. The built environment has traditionally assimilated standards and promoted inventive pronouncements, competencies that can and should lead the sustainability movement as society seeks for ways to live in dynamic stability with its own various needs and the natural world. Planning for sustainability in the built environment requires us to go beyond our individual disciplines to consider the variety of economic, social, and environmental impacts of our decisions in the long-term (Ruth Steiner, The Significance of Sustainability to the Built Environment). The main challenge in sustainability in the built environment disciplines is to become multi-disciplinary and trans disciplinary in our teachings and learnings (Ruth Steiner, The Significance of Sustainability to the Built Environment). Notwithstanding the above mentioned, for us to better comprehend sustainability and what is required, we ought to be aware of the modifications that accrued in the architectural arena inclusive of that of the building design and urbanization practices respectively throughout the preceding century. We are obligated to monitor the history of sustainability in the built environment. We can begin to categorize this history into five main segments that molded the architectural discourse and practice we are endorsing today. Four of the five of those segments remained subjective predominantly by a major reductionist paradigm that defined sustainability for architecture and the built environment. The reductionist paradigm seeks primarily the decrease of negative building impacts through environmental efficiency among other sustainable inserts such as the cost of living etc. Conversely, we are at a paradigm shift that manoeuvres from a dissimilar paradigm.
