Clarification Division Essay A classification-division essay presents an analysis by separating items: if you are classifying, you are placing different items into a set of categories. Each member of each category must be logically related. For example, you can classify people by age category: child, teen, and adult.

If you are dividing, you are taking a single item and breaking it down into its smaller parts. Each part must represent a logical division of the larger unit. For example, you can divide a single car into a brake system, transmission, exhaust system, and so forth.I. Writing a Classification Division Essay A.

Selecting a Topic When deciding on a topic for this essay, you must first decide whether you want to write a classification or a division essay. If you select a classification topic, then you are going to place different items into logically related categories. When considering different topics, you want to be sure that there are enough logical categories for your topic to meet the essay length requirements.

Beds, for example, probably wouldn’t be a good topic since there aren’t that many categories of beds.Second, you want to think about the categories: on what basis are you going to place the different items into each category? If you select a division topic, then you are going to divide a single unit into smaller systems. When considering different topics for division, be sure that you are going to stay with a single unit—it can be easy to begin classifying when you should be dividing. For example, you can divide a single human body into a circulatory system, nervous system, digestive system, etc. However, if you then include developing circulatory systems along with an adult’s developed circulatory system, then you are beginning to classify systems into developing and developed. This is an easy trap to fall into. B.

Writing the Classification Division Essay i. Writing the Introduction As with any academic essay, the introduction needs to explain the topic of the paper and provide a thesis statement. In between the introducing the topic and the thesis statement, you need to add transitional information so that the information in the introduction moves from general to specific.A good idea for transitional information is an explanation of the importance of the analysis you’re conducting.

This gives your audience a reason to read your essay. The following is an example of an introduction. The topic is automobiles, and this will be a classification of autos into types: SUVs, trucks, sports, and economy.

The most general information is in italics; it introduces the basic topic and establishes some context for your reader. The transitional information is underlined. Finally, the thesis statement is in bold.In the US, the automobile has become a fundamental part of our culture. Most people are anxious to have their first car, and after getting it, they will likely own one for the rest of their lives. Because of the importance of cars in US society, consumers have an incredible number of cars to choose from.

However, individual cars can be grouped into common types; understanding the characteristics of these types helps consumers in making an informed decision before buying a car. The four most common automobile types in the US are SUVs, trucks, sports cars and economy cars. i. Writing the Body Paragraphs You will use the body paragraphs of your essay to explain the categories or divisions you are working with.

In each body paragraph, you need to make clear what the characteristics of each category are. It should be obvious from your explanations how each category differs from the other categories. If you believe that these differences will not be obvious to your reader, then you can explain them explicitly. Here is an example of a body paragraph that continues from the example introduction given above.

One of the most popular car types in the US today is the SUV, or Sport Utility Vehicle. Although they come in different models with different features, they all share basic characteristics. They are often as large as more conventional trucks, can seat from six to eight people, and have a covered storage area in the back. Thus, they are ideal for large families or for those who commonly haul around groups of people and equipment or luggage.

SUVs also share poor gas mileage and the handling and braking of large pick ups in addition to higher maintenance and repair costs.Popular SUVs include the Ford Expedition, Chevy Tahoe and Dodge Durango. In this paragraph, the first sentence is the topic sentence (in bold).

This topic sentence comes from the information given in the thesis statement in the introduction. Notice that in the example introduction given above, the thesis statement lists SUVs as the first category for this essay. Therefore, the above body paragraph will be first in the essay. In other words, what you put in the thesis statement must match the information in the body paragraphs, both in content and placement.
