Chapter 1:
In chapter one we can see that Heinrichs likes to explain what is happening to the reader through examples in his personal life.
It is clear he is trying to shower the reader how to argue more productively.
He says rhetoric is most used in politics and advertising
His thesis is that rhetoric is an important skill to have in the 21st century.
Main point is rhetorics are used all the time in everyday life so we should familiarize and master them.
Chapter 2:
Says that you must have good rhetoric techniques when in an argument
Arguments with married couples can sometimes get heated but if done in the correct way it can help solve the problem in a productive manner.
He continues to list other examples that the reader will be familiar with to relate better with the reader.
He gives the three points a debater should do, conceded, lie about it, or even debate it in the first place.
Cicero seems to be his favorite rhetoric.
Arguing is more than just getting people to chose your side.
Multiple steps to an argument
Chapter 3:
He uses Aristotle as a great example
Each argument that happens has a specific tense and topic that may move the argument in one direction or another.
People feel that their beliefs will not and or cannot change.
A man takes over the argument by talking about what may happen in the future. This gives him the lead in the argument.
Most important part of an argument may be determining the tense of it.
Deliberative debates are usually more productive than any other form of debates.

He discusses the best idea that Aristotle came up with which was the tripartite division of argumentation.

Concession shows the difference between arguing and fighting which is really important to understand when arguing
Chapter 5:
Decorum is also very important
It allows the persuader to actually win an argument while giving up at the same time.
He cites Eminem who makes himself feel like an insider by mixing himself in. \
The rules of Decorum change for each person they are not the same for everyone.
Argument isn’t always about winning but about reaching an agreement.
Chapter 6:
Likeable people could be worse at persuading people to do something.
Get things done rather than just hold onto values.
You cannot just be logical because this is not what it takes to win arguments.
If you are going to change your position is has to be done well and with skill so you do not seem weak.
Pretend to choose an inevitable choice.
Chapter 7:
Sometimes better to be competent than to be well liked
Giving kids more may make the kids less respectful to the parents.
Heinrich and his wife establish themselves as deciders.
This makes their children behave better.

He uses disinterested to mean selfless or unbiased.

Pretending to be humble is a very good trick that will help you in many arguments along your way.

Pathos seems to be the least respected form of persuasion but he sees it as the most effective form.
The best way to build pathos is to tell someone a story about yourself.
Suspension of emotion can be stronger than the emotion itself sometimes.
Emotional steps in an argument many need to be practiced beforehand.
Chapter 10:
People can use same rhetorical tricks to get a different point across.
Requires audiences to be passive and not to skeptical.
Humor isn’t always the best motivator.
Setting a backfire can also be very important and successful.
Chapter 11:
Learn values, words, and manners to better relate with their audience.
Stonewalling begins with demonstrative rhetoric.
When they think the person is making an appeal they may not budge in the argument.
Common places can also be very beneficial.
Chapter 12:

Sometimes the best for of arguing can be irrelevance

Strictly logical arguments and arguments that incorporate logos
Do not argue the inarguable
Continue the debate instead of shutting it down
Even tho there is definitely a right way to argue there is a wrong way as well which could upset you opponent
Chapter 16:
Most common way to use a rhetoric is when convincing someone to buy something
Emphasize ethos so you will be able to connect to your audience
Distinguish between the appearance between virtual and real thing
Chapter 17:
Practical wisdom is a good and of you do that you are good at getting things done
Use rhetorical devices to look at a person’s core characters
Practical wisdom does not even translate to practicality in your life.
Chapter 18:
Most people use a lot of schemes but do not even realize it.
