Assignment One Earl BUS 311 October 28, 2011 Professor Assignment One Describe the nature of the organization, its size, and any specific human resource challenges it faces. The name of my company is Coca-Cola Bottling Company Consolidated (CCBCC). It is the nation’s largest independent Coca-Cola bottler. We make, sell and distribute Coca-Cola products along with other unique beverages. We operate in 11 states, primarily in the Southeast, with corporate offices located in Charlotte, NC. Our stock is traded on the NASDAQ exchange under the symbol COKE.

Coke has a large human resource department and it faces challenges on a daily basis dealing with hiring and firing of employees. Describe the major legal concerns of the organization and recommend how those concerns should be addressed. “Given the clear and obvious importance as well as the complexities associated with the legal environment of human resource management, it is critically important that organizations comply with the laws and regulations that govern human resource management practices to the best of their ability. The assurance of compliance can best be done through a three-step process. The first step is to ensure the managers clearly understand the laws that govern every aspect of human resource management. In other words, all managers must understand and be intimately familiar with the various laws that restrict and govern their behavior vis-a’-vis their employees.

Second, managers should rely on their own legal and human resource staff to answer questions and review procedures periodically. Almost all large organizations have a legal staff consisting of professional trained in various areas of legal environment of business.A human resource manager or other manager with a legal question regarding a particular employment issue or practice is well advised to consult the firm’s attorney about the legality of that particular action. And third, organizations may also find it useful to engage occasionally in external legal audits of their human resource management procedures. This audit might involve contracting with an outside law firm to review the organization’s HRM systems and practices to ensure that they comply with all appropriate laws and regulations.Such an external audit will, of course, be expensive and somewhat intrusive into the organization’s daily routine. When properly conducted, however, external audits can keep an organization out of trouble”.

Determine how the organization should address current (or anticipated) human resource issues concerning expanding into international markets. “One issue is the development of an international HRM strategy. Another is developing an understanding of the cultural environment of human resource management.A third is developing an understanding of the political and legal environment of international business”. Make recommendations concerning how the organization can leverage its human resource to come out on top in highly competitive environment.

Organizations can leverage its human resources by providing management with the knowledge and skills necessary that will motivate and encourage employees to perform beyond expectations. By providing continuous training to workforce to ensure that they stay competitive in the marketplace.Recruit exceptional talent and create effective strategies that will retain employees. Management should identify and resolve employee related issues; increasing employee morale. Coca-Cola is a successful business because they recognize the value of recruiting the best people for their positions. They are involved with what their employees are doing through knowledge management.
