Bisphenol A (BPA) is an industrial chemical that has been present in many hard plastic bottles and metal-based food and beverage cans since the 1960s. Bisphenol A-based polycarbonate is used as a plastic coating for children’s teeth to prevent cavities, as a coating in metal cans to prevent the metal from contact with food contents, as the plastic in food containers, refrigerator shelving, baby bottles, water bottles, returnable containers for juice, milk and water, micro-wave ovenware and eating utensils” Studies so far that reported that the levels of exposure to Bpa is low for Humans.There are concern of the Potentail effects of Bap on the brain, behavior, and prostate gland in fetuses, infants, and young children.

the current rule manufacturers of food packaging can use the chemical within regulation without having to tell the FDA and do not have to disclose the existence or the nature of the different formulations of the epoxy linings.The state of Tennessee is attempting to amend the House Bill 445, Title 47, Chapter 18; Title 53 and Title 68, relative to containers that contain BPA. The amendment states that in January 1, 2012 no entity shall sell or manufacture in commerce in this state and manufacturers shall not replace BPA with carcinogens rated by the Environmental Protection Agency as A, B, or C carcinogens or substances listed on the EPA’s “List of Chemicals Evaluated for Carcinogenic Potential”.Manufacturers shall use the least toxic alternative when replacing BPA in reusable food and beverage containers, this act shall take effect upon becoming a law.

If there is so much controversy around BPA I think the Government should regulate its use very tightly if it has the capability of effecting young children or even unborn children for that matter alone.This chemical needs to be tested even more vigorously to determine its effects on adults and the elderly also, because it could be a contributor to some illnesses that doctors are trying to find the cures for or just trying to slow them down. This chemical could be the cause of some cancers or child illnesses. Without stricter regulation and testing there are many things that may never be found out about what illnesses BPA contributes to if any.
