Nursing is based on the fundamental of caring that consists of five professional values of autonomy, human dignity, integrity, and social justice. A nurse carries out various nursing roles with professional values of caring: Provider of care, designer of care, manager of care, coordinator of care, and member of the profession. To be able to perform the nursing roles, a nurse must be competent with critical thinking skill and knowledge. He or she research evidenced-based practice to reach the best patient outcome. A nurse can improve his or her performance by applying research evidence available (Fain, 2017). By furthering education, I will be able to improve my abilities as a nurse to provide better patient care and obtain higher knowledge.
Evidenced-based practice, research, and knowledge are important factors in nursing. As a nurse, he or she needs to be competent to carry out the tasks. To meet the needs of the cared, the nurse should have strong critical thinking skills and knowledge that are evidence based. Evidenced- based practice, research, and knowledge are important factors in nursing. According to Fain, “Evidence- based nursing practice, relies on evidence from research and refers to clinicians making an effort to integrate research findings into clinician thinking and decision making” (Fain, 2017).
The role of nurses is to provide the care who needs. A competent nurse performs various roles: Provider of care, designer of care, manager of care, coordinator of care, and member of the profession. One of these nursing roles, is a provider of care. To promote the best outcome of care and patient safety, a nurse needs to utilize the knowledge of evidenced-based practice as a provider of care. He or she needs to continue research to solve the problems and obtain new knowledge to meet the goal of nursing care.
A nurse applies the culture of professional nursing core values while fulfilling nursing role. Caring is the fundamental of nursing profession, which is consisting of five core values: altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity, and social justice. A carling nurse integrates these professional core values in clinical practice. Altruism is being selflessness and compassionated. A nurse with altruism concerns for other’s wellbeing. Autonomy is having the authority to decide and carry it out based on the nurse’s knowledge. Human dignity means that nurses need to treat each patient ethically with respecting individual’s difference. Another professional nursing core value is integrity. Integrity and as one of nursing core value is One of these values I want to emphasize is autonomy which means the ability to decide freely based on the knowledge. Autonomy is shown in my nursing care when I can make a clinical judgement utilizing the knowledge from evidenced-based practice and research. For an example, I will hold a physician order if there is possible harm to a patient by utilizing knowledge and report to the physician.
Care coordinator roles are one of many vital roles in nursing. Care coordinators plan, supervise, monitor, and evaluate interdisciplinary care of a patient. A nurse needs to utilize the health care resources such as healthcare specialists to meet the needs of patients and promote the best outcome of care. A nurse needs to be competent to be a leader in a healthcare team. Critical thinking skills are crucial to be able to carry out the role as care coordinator. The nurse needs to research evidenced-based practice to solve the problem when it comes to questions about promoting a quality outcome of care.
I am pursuing the Bachelor of Science in Nursing to improve my abilities as a nurse to provide better patient care and obtain higher knowledge. My goal is to be a competent nurse who can integrate professional nursing values of care. The value of caring can be achieved by fulfilling five values: autonomy, human dignity, integrity, and social justice. Obtaining the Bachelor of Science in Nursing will help me to have profounder critical thinking skills and advanced knowledge, that are based on professional nursing values.
