The Significance of Community Service/Volunteerism
Community Service is unpaid work intended to be of social and personal use, while benefiting one’s community. It is sometimes non-voluntary as it is required for some individuals to give back to society or improve socially. Community Service means to me, being able to impact an individual or group. By this I mean, while providing my service and time, people can witness my enthusiasm and passion for doing unpaid work. It also means that through my actions I can allow someone’s view of Community Service to change and they in turn can become a part of the motive. Being an individual who cares enough to participate in unpaid activities means that I choose to be a part of something that will improve a community and by extension the nation.
Volunteerism on the other hand is the act of intentionally providing individual or group services for no financial or social gain. It is usually done to benefit another person or group and not subjected to a specific area or community alone. As an individual who believes in volunteerism, it means to me that I can be a part of a cause that will change someone’s life for a long time if not forever. It also means, being able to someone’s life gives me a liberating feeling and as such volunteering is something that has changed my life on a large scale.
Vision 2030, relative to Community Service/Volunteerism
“Jamaicans are empowered to achieve their fullest potential.” Being the first of the four goals of Vision 2030, I think it is in closer relation to Community Service/Volunteerism. The reason being, Jamaicans are people who emulate others and follow examples whether it be positive or negative. Therefore, the prevalence of Community Service/Volunteerism, in my opinion, will bring forth more genuine volunteers and philanthropists in our society. Without a doubt our nation’s people will be driven, motivated and inspired to elevate themselves and attain great success. The third goal of Vision 2030, “Jamaica’s economy is prosperous”, relates heavily to Community Service/Volunteerism. A justification for such is that, the country’s economy is extremely diversified, and as such can and will be significantly improved through the movement of Community Service and volunteerism. With Jamaica being a country with great successors and world-known idols, our economy should not only depend primarily on tourism, agriculture or finance but on the philanthropic nature of its people. At every stage of economic development, ‘giving back’ has been essential. Whether it be from pro-social behaviour or an urge from deep within our souls.
Making Contributions to Vision 2030 through Community Service
“Whatever the mind can conceive, it can achieve.” This famous quote relates to Goal 1 of Vision 2030. With help, willpower and perseverance, anyone can set personal standards and achieve their goals and dreams. I am currently volunteering as a tutor at the Mona Baptist Church HELP Ministry’s Homework Program where I will be assisting students the ages of nine (9) to eleven (11) to fully understand concepts and topics from the classroom that they have issues with. More specifically, I will be applying a simple method during my Community Service. I will teach the importance of school and getting an education. Highlight the essence of team work and cooperation in solving problems. Encourage the students to be high achievers and explain that they can achieve anything once they decide to and are determined do so. Promote proper values and ethics, such as, proper hygiene and good manners. Finally, I will ensure that the students understand the importance of sharing, caring, volunteering and giving back. I believe that following this method will take Jamaica a step or few closer to Vision 2030.
